National Raspberry Cake Day

Today is National Raspberry Cake Day! This holiday makes today as sweet as a summer day can be. Tender raspberries are among the best of fruits that nature has to offer. Put them into a cake……Then, you can “have your fruit and eat it, too!”

Raspberries are one of summer’s sweet, fruity treats. And, the harvest is going on right now. So, it’s only appropriate that we enjoy a piece of raspberry cake in celebration of the harvest.

Here is our three step recipe for a perfect National Raspberry Cake Day:

Go out to a “pick your own” farm and pick them fresh. Bring the kids along.
Bake fresh raspberries into a cake (or two).
Eat some raspberry cake with family and friends.

Raspberry lovers will also enjoy National Raspberry Cream Pie Day.

Nelson Mandela Day

Today is Nelson Mandela Day! Every year on 18 July — the day Nelson Mandela was born — the UN joins a call by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to devote 67 minutes of time to helping others, as a way to mark Nelson Mandela International Day.

For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity — as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa.

Happy birthday to a great man, Nelson Mandela.

Yellow Pig Day

Today’ s obscure holiday is Yellow Pig Day! it is a mathematician’s holiday celebrating yellow pigs (is there such a thing!?!), and the number 17. It has been celebrated annually since the early 1960’s, primarily on college campuses, and primarily by mathematicians. On campus, Yellow Pig Cake and Yellow Pig Carols are tradition!

If you are a mathematician, spend part of the day thinking and working in multiples of 17. And, while you do so, give a little thought to yellow pigs.

Fresh Spinach Day

Today is Fresh Spinach Day, a midsummer occasion when anyone can participate by consuming extra helpings of the vitamin-rich leafy food staple.
Yum!

Cow Appreciation Day

Today is Cow Appreciation Day! Now there’s something to “Moo” about! Our appreciation for cows can be expressed in many ways. Some websites suggest you go out and give a cow a big hug and/or a kiss. While it might sound like fun, you don’t have to go to extremes to enjoy this special day. It can be as simple as pausing for a moment to think about cows, and all that they do for us.

Now that we’ve had our moment of silence, it’s time to celebrate. Have an ice cold glass of milk. Add chocolate syrup, if you prefer. And, don’t forget to get your fill of cheese. Sorry, goat cheese is not allowed today.

Note: Restaurants and dairy companies celebrate this day by offering specials. Watch for them, and save!

National Nude Day!

National Nude Day is a way to keep cool on a hot , sticky summer day. So, take it off……take it all off.

…. Sorry,we will display no pictures of National Nude Day.

National Nude Day is a serious event. There are a sizable number of nudist groups around the world. They are not perverts. Rather, Nudists believe that the body is a beautiful thing, and meant to be …displayed. Nudist colonies, nude beaches, and other venues exist to cater to the preferences of individuals who seek to walk around “au natural”.

We will not speak to whether this is right or wrong. We simply desire to make you aware of all of this holiday. Snicker if you will. But, please don’t put the “sleeze” into this holiday.

Interestingly, there are a lot of sites promoting Nude Day T-shirts. But, isn’t this problematic? How can you wear a T-shirt on National Nude Day!??

Embrace Your Geekness Day

Embrace Your Geekness Day is a great day to be a Geek. Or, to know a Geek.
A geek is an individual who is highly intelligent (brainy) and technically oriented. They are most often associated with the computer, and computer systems world. A geek is usually formal, studious and into his technical world, often to the exclusion of all else. A geek is closely related to a “Nerd”. A nerd however, may or may not possess technical expertise.
Some people view the term “Geek” with a negative connotation. Are they jealous of your knowledge and skills, perhaps?
Enjoy Embrace Your Geekness Day to the fullest. Spend plenty of time with your computer. Talk computer lingo and jargon. If you are a geek, stand tall and proud. Isn’t it great to be so brilliant and gifted!?

Different Coloured Eyes Day

Today’s obscure holiday is Different Coloured Eyes Day. Today has two reasons to celebrate. First of all, it celebrates diversity of eye colour. Wouldn’t the world be boring, if everyone had the same colour of eyes?

Secondly, it recognizes an eye condition called Heterochromia. People who have this trait, have two different colours of eyes. One eye may be brown, while the other is blue. Famous people who have Heterochromia include David Bowie, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Walken.

Your eyes are an important part of your appearance. They are also important in communications. When you look into your lover’s eyes, you need to like what you see. Making “eye contact” just wouldn’t be the same without different coloured eyes Isn’t it great that we have a variety of eye colours to set us apart from one another?

Eye colors include:

Shades of brown
Shades of blue
Shades of green
Black
Grey
Hazel

Celebrate Different Coloured Eyes Day by taking particular notice of the eye colours of everyone you see.

What’s your eye colour?

Teddy Bear Picnic Day

Today is Teddy Bear Picnic Day! On this gorgeous summer day, take your teddy bear (or teddy bears) out for a day in the sun. It’s time for a Teddy Bear Picnic! Make a few PB& J sandwiches for you and the kids, some cookies, and a jug of Koolaid. Take a blanket out under a shade tree, and enjoy lunch with your Teddy.

National Sugar Cookie Day

Today is National Sugar Cookie Day, a day to satisfy your sweet tooth. Popular with young kids, and old kids, sugar cookies usually don’t last long around the house.

It’s pretty easy to see how Sugar Cookies came to get their own special day. Almost everyone has had them. Many people are hooked on them. Put out a plate of sugar cookies, and you can be certain they won’t be there for long.

Spend a portion of the day baking sugar cookies. They are very easy to make. If you have kids, make today a real family holiday, and let them help with the baking. Homemade cookies taste best when you’ve helped bake them. Once you’ve baked the cookies, hurry and pop them into your mouth while they are still warm. They’re delicious!
