National Lasagna Day

Today is National Lasagna Day! We hope you have a big appetite. Sure, it’s July. Its hot and humid. Cooking up a pan of Lasagna will make the kitchen a lot hotter. But as it cooks, the smell will waft throughout the house. Your mouth will begin to water. When dinner time arrives, you will have a huge appetite for a huge piece of lasagna (or two!). Of this, you can be certain.

Lasagna is a favorite Italian dish. In between multiple layers of lasagna pasta are generous amounts of tomato sauce, cheeses, and sometimes hamburger and/or Italian sausage. It’s the favourite Italian dish of millions of Americans. We all would eat it more often, but this culinary work of art, made with loving hands, takes time to make and bake.

It is best to celebrate National Lasagna Day by baking the lasagna that you will eat today. If you don’t have the time, or the weather is just too hot, then head out to your favorite Italian restaurant.

All or Nothing Day

Friday’s obscure holiday is All or Nothing Day. How will your day go? Will you have it all….or nothing. (Sounds to me, a little like “Deal, or no Deal?”)

How would one describe All or Nothing Day. It is certainly a day of extremes. If you’re a gambler, it’s a day to go for broke. A little drastic day, perhaps. There’s definitely no grey area in how you spend this day.

We hope you have it all on All or Nothing Day, and every day.

Culinarians Day

Today is Culinarians Day, a special day for anyone who cooks! That means just about everyone of us get to celebrate this day. You don’t have to be a chef, or a graduate of a culinary institute to celebrate this delicious day. You simply have to cook, and to enjoy the results.

There’s national concern over growing obesity rates. Recognizing this fact, one would think that this is a huge holiday. However, we found this to be one of the least known holidays in the country….. up to now. Not anymore! We have documented it so all can enjoy Culinarians Day this year, and in future years.

Now get into your kitchen and celebrate Culinarians Day. Cook up a storm.

BTW: What time should we arrive to eat!?

Amelia Earhart Day

Today is Amelia Earhart Day, honoring the famous aviation pioneer on her birthday, born July 24th 1897, she broke many early aviation records.

Legend and mystery surrounds the final flight and disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. They were on a record setting attempt to fly around the world, when they became lost in the Pacific Ocean. On July 2, 1937, they headed on a difficult leg of the journey towards Howell Island in the Pacific. Weather conditions were less than ideal. While still in radio communication, ships on the ground confirmed that Earhart was having difficulty finding the island. Ultimately, radio communications faded and died. The plane was never heard from again.

The disappearance of Amelia Earhart’s plane resulted in the largest search and rescue operation to date. It also sparked rumors as to what caused the disappearance. To this day, theories and speculation still exists about the cause of the disappearance. Some theories involve conspiracies, and even alien abductions.

Did you Know? The proper spelling of her name is Amelia. It was misspelled in a song about her, and is now the more popular, albeit incorrect, spelling of her name.

Celebrate by learning and reading about Amelia Earhart, and other female aviators. We do not recommend you spend time searching for her or her plane. The U.S. navy searched over 250,000 miles of ocean to no avail.

Ratcatcher’s Day

Today’s obscure holiday is “Ratcatcher’s Day”. This day commemorates the Pied Piper of Hamelin, the most infamous of Ratcatchers.

One of the most well known German folklores is the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The town of Hamelin, Germany was infested by rats. The mayor promised to handsomely pay the Pied Piper, if he rid the town of rats. The Pied Piper played his flute. Lured by the magical music, all of the rats left town, and followed him. He played his music all the way down to the river. He waded into the river. The rats followed him and drowned. The mayor refused to pay him. So, one night when the townspeople were asleep, the Pied Piper played his music again. This time, the children of the town followed him all the way into a cave. Some versions for the legend vary here. In one version, the Pied Piper kept them there until he was paid by the town for his services. In most versions, the children were never to be seen again.

How many Rats were lured to the River? Estimates are upwards of a million!

If you see a Ratcatcher today, wish them Happy Ratcatcher’s Day!

National Ice Cream Day

Today is National Ice Cream Day! When you get the urge for a snack on a hot, humid summer night, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? That’s right….Ice Cream! Therefore, it’s only fitting that ice cream be given it’s own special day. On this day, we hope you enjoy an ice cream cone, a sundae, or a milk shake. Set the diet aside and splurge a little…have one of each!

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday of the month.

Ice cream is nutritious. A little heavy on the sugar and calories, ice cream is otherwise good for you. Its base ingredient is milk, which is loaded with healthy vitamins and minerals.

Did you know? Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone. On July 23, 1904 at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. There is some controversy over this claim. Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. And, he was selling lemon ice in cones as early as 1896.

Moon Day

Today’s obscure holiday is “Moon Day”. Today commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969.

The Apollo Space program, begun by President John F. Kennedy, was created to put the first man on the moon. Apollo 11 fulfilled that dream, carrying astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Edwin Aldrin, Jr. What an amazing and historic event it was!

On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 was launched from Cape Kennedy Space Center atop a huge Saturn V rocket. On July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module, nicknamed the “Eagle”, touched down on the surface of the moon at Tranquility Base. Upon landing, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong reported “The Eagle Has Landed”. A few hours later, Neil Armstrong, stepped off of the Eagle’s ladder, placed one foot upon the moon’s surface and proclaimed: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”.

Spend today researching the moon and the Apollo Missions, there are tons of movies, websites and books on these subjects. A great day in our history.
