Fight Procrastination Day

Fight Procrastination Day is today. It’s a day to get things done, a call to action….a good follow-up to yesterday’s Be Late For Something Day.

To many people, procrastination is a way of life. The more difficult the action or decision, the easier it is to join the league of procrastinators. As a procrastinator, you are in very good company. You can even become a card carrying member of a Procrastinator’s club.

Today is a day to fight procrastination. Make a decision. Take action. Do it now. Do it today. It may be hard to do. But, you will be glad you did.

Now, all you have to do is stop procrastinating and decide to fight procrastination…today!

Theme of the Day: ” Never put of until tomorrow, what you can do today!” … Mark Twain

Have a very happy Fight Procrastination Day!

Be Late For Something Day

Today’s Obscure Holiday is Be Late For Something Day…. a great day to be a procrastinator. If you are among the millions of us who never seem to be able to stay on schedule, then you will certainly enjoy today.

Being late for something is a common occurrence. It’s caused by a whole host of reasons. Some are intentional, some are not. Fall behind schedule early in the day today, and you will be late for everything that follows. Doctors and lawyers are notoriously late for something….their appointment with you! It’s proper to be “fashionably late” for parties.

Important Note: We hope you thoroughly enjoy and participate in this day. But, whatever you do, don’t’ be late for your yoga class! lol

It is easy and natural to enjoy this special day. All you have to do is be late for something. That’s easy for procrastinators.  And, perhaps it’s easy for you!

Newspaper Carrier Day

Newspaper Carrier Day is celebrated on September 4th.

International Newspaper Carrier Day is observed on varying dates, and is established by the Newspaper Association of America. Future dates: October 19, 2013, October 18, 2014.

Newspaper Carrier Day honors everyone  who is now, or once was, a newspaper carrier. The list includes thousands, if not millions, of people. Years ago, this job was primarily populated by kids, from pre-teen through approximately sixteen. At that age, many, but not all, kids moved to restaurant, grocery store and retail type of jobs.

About Newspaper Carrier Day:

This day commemorates the hiring of the very first newspaper carrier. Newspaper carriers date back to the early 1800s. On September 10, 1833, 10 year old Barney Flaherty became the first newspaper carrier. Benjamin Day, publisher of The New York Sun, hired Barney Flaherty to sell papers for his penny press. The only job requirement, was that he had to show that he could throw a newspaper into the bushes.

Now, few kids deliver papers anymore except in small towns. But, the “Carrier Day” tradition lives. This job is now largely held by adults, many of them delivering the paper from their cars.

Happy Newspaper Carrier Day!

Skyscraper Day

Skyscraper Day is a day to appreciate and admire the world’s tallest skyscrapers.

Skyscrapers are truly engineering and architectural marvels. In many crowded cities, space is in short supply, and real estate prices are ever increasing. Building “up” becomes more and more logical. As technical capabilities in construction improved, skyscrapers have become taller and taller. In addition, there is a certain prestige to have one of the tallest structures in the world in your city.

A Tall Debate: There is some disagreement over how to measure the height of skyscrapers. At issue, is whether to measure the height of flagpoles and antenna atop most tall buildings.

Have a very happy Skyscraper Day.

National Beheading Day

WARNING: Heads will roll!

National Beheading Day is today. Hold onto your hat. And, make certain to keep your head screwed on tight.

Every once in a while, we happen upon a special day that has no apparent rhyme or reasoning. We can’t imagine why someone would create this day. It defies logic. But, National Beheading Day is very prolific on the net. So, therefore, it warrants a few (very few) words.

Throughout history, beheadings have occurred. The list is long, including commoners and Kings. The most notable king to be beheaded was Charles I of England in 1645.

While this is a big day, don’t go crazy and lose your head.  In addition to protecting your neck, we suggest you spend this day reading about famous beheadings.

Emma M. Nutt Day

Emma M. Nutt Day celebrates the first woman telephone operator in America.

Emma Nutt became the first woman telephone operator on September 1, 1878. She loved the job, and worked at it for 33 years.

This special day celebrates the world of telephone operators. It was a very important job for many decades. Today, the position has been eliminated being replaced by automation in telephone systems.

A little side note about Emma: According to Emma, she was “very thankful that my first name was not Imma”.

National Trail Mix Day

National Trail Mix Day features a high energy, tasty treat for the trail or snacks. You can buy packages of trail mix at a store. Or, you can make up your own, using the ingredients you like best.

When you head out to a campout, a hike or to go biking, take the Trail Mix along with you. It provides the extra energy boost to keep you from tiring along the way, and allows you to reach your destination full of pep. Don’t limit trail mix to the trail. It is also good at campouts.

Here is a fun way that the Boy Scouts make Trail Mix:

Ask each hiker or camper to bring a box or bag of their favourite cereal, nuts, pretzels, raisins, dried fruit, M&Ms, etc. For younger hikers or new members of the group, it’s best to provide them with a list of the types of food that can go into trail mix. That way, the inexperienced hiker won’t bring something that can not be easily carried. At the campout or before the hike, bring the group together and mix all the food in a big, big bowl. Put the mix into sealable baggies and pass them out to each hiker.

Tips: When making your own trail mix, avoid messy items that leave your hands sticky.  Also avoid too many salty items. For example, unsalted nuts are better than salted ones.

Happy trails to you!

National Marshmallow Toasting Day

During eleven out of the  twelve months of the year, we enjoy a wide range of holidays. When we get to August, there is a major shortage of big holidays to celebrate. Perhaps that is why many Europeans take the month of August off for vacation.

Perhaps it as just as well that there are no big holidays to compete with National Marshmallow Toasting Day. After all, how could any holiday compare with this day!?!

Enjoy today or tonight by a campfire or bonfire, toasting a big, soft, sticky and sweet marshmallow, or two, or three, or….. Summer would not be the same without a campfire and this great campfire treat. Summer is short. Summer is good. So enjoy it while it is still here. Toast a marshmallow and forget about everything else.

And don’t forget to make a few S’mores. The recipe is below.

S’mores Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Chocolate candy bar
  • Honey Graham Crackers

More Herbs, Less Salt Day

More Herbs, Less Salt Day promotes use of healthy herbs over salts.

Late August is a very appropriate time to celebrate this special day. The harvest of garden herbs is at its peak. There’s nothing better than fresh garden herbs in your favourite recipes.

Wellcat.com, the creators of this day, offer little information about this day, other than the fact that herbs are better for your health than salt……….. How true.

Happy More Herbs, Less Salt Day!
