Work Like a Dog Day –

Today is Work Like a Dog Day. This day honours and recognizes the hardest working among us.

Some people skate by, doing as little as possible. Others, do only what they have to. Others still work like a dog. While work is to be done, they dig in relentlessly. They seldom take a break until the task is completed.

We want to make sure to differentiate between Work-A-Holics and those who Work Like a Dog. Work-A-Holics are always working, even though they may not be working hard. Those who work like a dog, work very hard while they are working. But, they do not work all of the time.

Today is a day to show appreciation for those who carry more than their load, and work like a dog. You can also honor them by working like a dog today.

International Forgiveness Day –

International Forgiveness Day- the first Sunday of August

Forgiveness Day is a time to forgive and to be forgiven. It must be a pretty good thing, because there are two groups that lay claim to a Forgiveness Day in the month of August. Both are world or international events. There’s enough trouble and strife in the world. Two forgiveness days can only help to make things better. We agree with the sponsors of this day, that a little more forgiveness will  help to make the world a much better place.

Global Forgiveness Day began in 1994. It was created and is sponsored by the Christian Embassy of Christ’s Ambassadors. This holiday originated in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

International Forgiveness Day was created by the World Forgiveness Alliance, a non-denominational, educational foundation. According to their website: ” International Forgiveness Day dedicated to evoking the healing power of forgiveness worldwide.” The founder is Robert W. Plath, from Mill Valley, California.

Do your part:  Take a few moments to sincerely forgive someone. And, make it public. That way forgiveness will spread.

National Watermelon Day –

Today is National Watermelon Day! This big fruit deserves its own big day. And, so we give pause to celebrate watermelons on National Watermelon Day. Sweet and tasty, watermelons are one of summer’s favourite fruits. It’s standard fare at picnics. While watermelon is over 90% water, it sure tastes good. And, what picnic would be complete without a seed spitting contest?

Please don’t limit your consumption of watermelon to just this month. Stores carry watermelon twelve months of the year.

National Ice Cream Sandwich Day –

Today is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day! A time to enjoy a cold sandwich, an ice cream sandwich!

In July and August, we find many special days for one kind of ice cream or another. The ice cream sandwich is so popular, and tastes so good, that it earns its own special day  –  today.

Ice cream sandwiches have been around since the early 1900s. Vanilla, chocolate and a combination of the two, are the most popular. You can make homemade sandwiches. Just put some ice cream between a couple of wafers, and.. …Voila! Don’t have wafers? That’s okay. Put some ice cream between two of your favourite cookies.

We hope that you have a great National Ice Cream Sandwich Day.

National Raspberry Cream Pie Day –

National Raspberry Cream Pie Day is perfect for raspberry lovers.

Raspberries are one of the gems of summer. Sweet and tasty, they are loved by millions of people (and birds, too!) With the arrival of ripe berries, it is time to make and enjoy some of your favourite dessert treats. High on the list for raspberry lovers, is raspberry cream pie.

Make this a super raspberry day. Go out and pick your own berries. Then, make a raspberry cream pie. Better still, make one for you, and another to give away to a family member, a neighbour, or a friend. Then, dig in and eat a piece of pie.Yummmm!

Mutt’s Day –

It’s Mutt’s Day.  Mutts deserve their day in the spotlight, as much as a pure breed. If you own a mutt, or you are a mutt (reading this), then you know this day is for you.

By definition a mutt, sometimes called a “Half-breed”, is a dog that is of mixed breed.  They come from two to several breeds. Purebred owners, and sometimes the public in general, view them as lesser in many ways. Mutt owners know better. They value the diversity and uniqueness of their mutts. Sure, a mutt doesn’t carry the expensive price tag that a purebred with papers has on its head. To the mutt owner, however, the mutt is invaluable. In addition, mutts don’t walk around needing to prove anything. You won’t see them strutting around any dog shows trying to prove they are the best.

To all mutts and and mutt owners, we hope you thoroughly enjoy Mutt’s Day. Spend the day relaxing and doing all the things you and your dog like to do. Do so with both of your chins held high. For your mutt is worth a million bucks!

National Hot Dog Day –

National Hot Dog Day celebrates one of America’s favourite summer sandwiches. It is only fitting that this dog gets its day.

Its summertime. Hot dogs are centre stage on the grill, and at picnics all across America. They are at the ballpark. They are sold from carts on street corners in every city. It’s not hard to find them. We consume hundreds of millions of hot dogs on the Fourth of July alone.

Enjoy National Hot Dog Day to the fullest. Have a couple of hot dogs for lunch or dinner. And, don’t forget to cook a few on a stick at the evening campfire.

What’s in a hot dog? Don’t’ ask, and we won’t tell. Sometimes, its best if you don’t know.

Happy National Hot Dog Day!

The companion for  National Hot Dog Day is National Mustard Day

How many Hot Dogs do we eat?

We consume so many hot dogs, in so many venues, that the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council hesitates to forecast consumption. But, it does report that each year we buy over 837 million packages of hot dogs at retail outlets, and over 24 million hot dogs at baseball stadiums alone.

Hammock Day –

Date when: Always on  July 22nd.

Summer is in full swing. It’s time to slow down and to relax. During the Dog Days of summer (and all of the other summer days, too), there is no better place to slow down and relax, than on a hammock.

Hammock Day is appropriately celebrated right in the middle of the Dog Days of summer (July 3 though August 11th.

Hammock Day exists to enjoy summer as it should be enjoyed. People celebrate Hammock Day by spending as much time relaxing on it as possible. Getting out of your hammock to get a snack, or your favourite summer beverage is okay. But, it is not a day for work. Cutting the lawn is forbidden on this day.

The roots of Hammock Day and Hammock Day history is largely unknown. Maybe the originator was too busy napping on his or her hammock!?!

Peach Ice Cream Day

Just squeezing this in at the end of the day!

Peaches are one of the best flavours of the summer season. People wait for about 48 weeks for the peach harvest to ripen. And, when it does, for a few short weeks, its  “peach everything”! In celebration of the harvest, the ice cream companies make peach ice cream. Its hard to find other times of the year. Most major ice cream makers only produce it during the summer. (It kinda makes you yearn for the old days of HOJO’s 28 Flavors!)

Peach Ice cream is the way to go today. Enjoy it on an ice cream cone, in an ice cream soda, in a sundae, or simply in a dish.

You’ll find Peach Ice Cream Day is the real scoop!

Cow Appreciation Day

Today is Cow Appreciation Day. And, that’s no bull! But, it is something to “Moo” about.

C’mon, big guy…… give me a hug!

Our appreciation for cows can be expressed in many ways. Some websites suggest you go out and give a cow a big hug and/or a kiss. While it might sound like fun, you don’t have to go to extremes to enjoy this special day. It can be as simple as pausing for a moment to to think about cows, and all that they do for us.

Now that we’ve had our moment of silence, it’s time to celebrate. Have an ice cold glass of milk. Add chocolate syrup, if you prefer. We could tell you to fire up the grill, and cook some burgers or a steak….but that’s just not us. However, we will tell you it is a great day to get your fill of cheese. Sorry, goat cheese is not allowed today.

Note: Restaurants and dairy companies celebrate this day by offering specials. Watch for them, and save.
