National Play-Doh Day

PlayDohCanToday is National Play-Doh Day, celebrating a great childhood play toy. Invented in the mid 1950s, it has entertained millions of children, and allowed them to express their creativity, both at home and in the classroom.

The invention was simple. A school teacher wanted a safe modeling clay for her pre-schoolers. She asked her brother-in-law Joseph McVicker, who worked at a chemical company, to come up with something. The result was simple….flour, water and food coloring.

It’s fun and easy to celebrate National Play-Doh Day. Simply pull out the Play-Doh and ……Play! There are other brands of play clay on the market, but nothing quite brings back the memories like the real Play-Doh.

Happy National Play-Doh Day!

Defy Superstition Day

Today is Defy Superstition Day. This is your opportunity to break those superstitious beliefs that you have been living with most, or all, of your life. Did you note that Defy Superstition Day is celebrated on the 13th? It was established on this day for a reason.

Many people have a long list of superstitions. Tops on the list, is the unlucky number 13. Black cats are also also an object to be wary of. Walking under a ladder has always been viewed as something to avoid (actually, there is some logic to this superstition). The list goes on, and on, and on.

Did you Know? Hotels do not have a 13th floor or a room #13. Hotels usually do not have any room that ends in the #13. It’s all because people are superstitious about this number.

Defy Superstition Day was created to help you to eliminate superstitions that have been haunting you. Use today as it is intended……. to blow away the superstitions in your life. So today, step on that crack, walk under that ladder, sing at the table and open an umbrella in the house…it’s all good!

Chocolate Milkshake Day

chocolate_milkshake-3479.widec_Chocolate Milkshake Day is an opportunity for chocoholics to savour. The weather may have cooled off. But, our appetite for chocolate, specifically chocolate milkshakes, hasn’t cooled off one iota.

What a great day this will be! Simply combine a little milk with some chocolate ice cream, add some extra chocolate syrup, and mix it well in a blender. That’s all you need to mix up a big, tall chocolate milkshake.

On a diet? Not today. A lot of people celebrate Chocolate Milkshake Day with not one, but two or more chocolate milkshakes.

Bottoms up!

Teddy Bear Day

Today is Teddy Bear Day. A Teddy Bear is a special friend to children all over the world. He’s cuddly. He makes you feel secure in an otherwise insecure world. He’s lovable. Your Teddy Bear is both a companion and a comforter. And, he’s not afraid of the dark. He’ll keep you safe.

Spend the day and night with your teddy bear . Cuddle up to him. Talk to him. And, do all of your favorite things together.

Parents and adults: No child should grow up without a teddy bear. If you know of any kid without one, use this day to buy a teddy bear for them.

As we become adults, some find it difficult to give up our teddy bears. We feel there is no reason to give him up. Some adults have their teddy bears around all their lives. Its perfectly normal….and okay.

Have a happy Teddy Bear Day!

Moldy Cheese Day

Moldy Cheese Day is today. Do you have any moldy cheese in your refrigerator? Do you need to have moldy cheese to celebrate this day? And, if you have any moldy cheese, what would you do with it today?

Every once in a while, we come across a special day that has no apparent rhyme or reason. Today is one of those days. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate this wonderful(?) and special holiday. Au contrare……. scour through the refrigerators at home and work today for moldy cheese. Office refrigerators are a great place to find moldy stuff. See if that moldy piece of cheese is salvageable. And, just enjoy the day.

If you find moldy cheese, take a slice off each side. The insides should still be good.

Did you Know? Mold is common in cheese. Its part of what gives a particular cheese flavour and character. For example, the blue stuff in Blu Cheese is mold.

International Literacy Day

International Literacy Day celebrates and promotes literacy all over the world.

The day was created by the United Nations. It is promoted by the UN’s UNESCO. According to their website: “The aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.”

Literacy is a global issue, and hence the UN takes an active role in promoting it. They do recognize and celebrate that billions of people are literate. But, they go further to promote literacy, and to seek improved literacy rates in every country of the world.

For more information, see See the United Nations UNESCO page on International Literacy Day.

National Grandparent’s Day

It is only right and fitting that one day of the year is set aside to honour our grandparents. It is time to celebrate those special people who are always there with a hug, a kiss, a cookie, something special, or take us somewhere.

National Grandparent’s Day originated in 1978. Then President Jimmy Carter declared it to be the first Sunday after Labour Day.

If you can, enjoy the day with them. That is the greatest gift they can receive from you. If you can’t see them, call them, or skype. When you call, make sure you have the time for a long conversation. Remember, grandparents will always ask about you first and listen intently to everything you have to say. They are never rushed or in a hurry. They are there just for you.
